more about the work
Amulets have existed across cultures for thousands of years, including Egypt, the Americas, Europe and Asia. Historically, Amulets are objects that protect the owner from evil and harm, or impart lucky attributes such as health, wealth or love.
Most of these embroideries were created during quarantine – a time of extreme emotional and physical hardship for many, yet also a time of growth, renewal and healing.
Sewing is a way to tap into ancient craft practices – moving the needle slowly by hand, through and over the material, in and out, up and down.
With that physicality in mind, the pieces ultimately act as a metaphor for the esoteric missive “As above So below,” providing a safe space between the imagined (a world we want) and the living world (both rewarding and at times, challenging).
