Embroidered Crazy Quilt
8" x 10"
Cotton embroidery floss on Belgian linen
This piece is an experiment in representation through stitching, using the "crazy quilt" as inspiration. For those of you who don't know, "crazy quilts" are a type of quilting technique where pieces are arranged in any which-way without following traditional patterning.
My making-background is rooted in textiles, with a particular historical and material interest in American quilting and Japanese boro.
More about the work:
Sewing is a way to tap into ancient craft practices – moving the needle slowly by hand, through and over the material, in and out, up and down.
With that physicality in mind, the pieces ultimately act as a metaphor for the esoteric missive “As above So below,” providing a safe space between the imagined (a world we want) and the living world (both rewarding and at times, challenging).
