Group Show - Something Completely Different at City Limits Gallery, Oakland. Ends September 13 It so happened that when Evan contacted me I was working on a new body of work. I did indeed submit something completely different for the show. Documentation of Temporary Still Life Series ("idealized") paper doll of Greek sculpture printed from the internet after googling "idealized male nude," Greek-style Kefir bottle with un-recyclable label removed, brown egg with natural condensation, used matches from a previous art project of holes burnt in pin-stripe wool, black taffeta intended for suit lining, geraniums from my window box, 1930s glass found on an urban archeological dig, 14K gold chain from a childhood necklace. 8" x 10" archival digital print on gloss white photo paper 2014 signed and dated A/P on the verso in archival inkpen |

sashiko mezzo piano
black risograph overlay 2014 "sashiko mezzo piano" is a study in the Japanese sewing practice of sashiko and the social implications of language arts and toil. the dots are a poem in japanese kanji, that i transliterated into music notes. the text for the poem includes words that share etymological meanings with the word "sashiko". the literal translation of "sashiko" is "little stabs" - the needle piercing the fabric over and over again. sashiko is a sewing technique from Japan, which involves a simple running stitch in order to create strength in garments or blankets. |

blue risograph background 2014 one particular group of textiles using this technique are called Boro - traditional japanese folk-ware and domestic textiles for farmers, rural, and trade-skill people. the dominant color of the fabrics is natural indigo, a dye accessible and affordable to the working classes. Boro is similar to quilting - worn and torn clothes and blankets become mended by using patches from other clothing and blankets. over time, the individual pieces carry deep history of the previous owner and are often kept in the family for generations for frugal reasons and are a symbol of hard work and presence. |

excerpt from book 2013 For 8 days, Leora Lutz and Natalija Pavlovic, who have never met in person, exchanged emails about their every-day observances and experiences. Written in a poetic diary format, the text exchange revealed an interplay between their personal lives. Their words literally played off of each other, like a game of ping pong back and forth, as if they were having a conversation in person. Layering the texts in both English and Cyrillic alphabets conceals most of the words while revealing new meanings that are found in the words that linger on the fringes of the paragraphs. The words on the fringe are used to create one poem, which was then transliterated using a color-code alphabet called colorlittera. |

house paint on linen, book of poetry 2013 Colorlittera was created by Lutz in 2011 as in international visual language that uses color in place of typography—uniting any language into one cohesive text. The colorlittera code was then painted on fabric as a representation of a traditional Serbian rug known as kilim. Not only do rugs serve a functional purpose in the home, but kilims are woven with patterns that are deeply symbolic of Serbian historical and domestic life. The modern-take on the kilim for the Ping Pong exhibition metaphorically weaves Lutz’ and Pavlovic’s conversations together into one object that transcends mere words and unites them in poetic visual language. |

"No Region Would" is a mondegreen. It's a mishearing or misinterpretation, a hear-homophony. Experiences ripple into catharsis as pulls out to expose possible engagements to feast on. As the title suggests, the capacity for an idea is being played out in free association, personal referential space, challenging hierarchy, territory and fidelity of sound.
