This project is a study in writing about the landscape during a desert excursion to the Salton Sea. As I photographed the landscape, I was writing words, which later were used as foundations for Haiku. The process involved creating a symbiotic relationship with the images and text relating to each other. The quietness of the desert is reiterated in the presentation, which is meant to read silently, as opposed to traditional poetry readings wherein the author reads out-loud to the audience. The silent reading generates a collective thought amongst the readers & they can hear their own voices unswayed by mine reading to them. beauty refusal was created in conjunction with UC Riverside "Writing the Desert" project curated by Shane Shukis, PhD, UCR Culver Center for the Arts and also presented in Sept. 2010 at Palm Springs Museum of Art.
